Position Summary
The Technical Designer leads the Technical Department at our cut-and-sew manufacturing facility. The Technical Designer plays a critical role in bridging the gap between creative concept and scalable production at House of Holmes. This position focuses on developing and executing accurate tech packs, fit specs, BOMs, construction standards, and prototype approvals across a diverse range of sewn products.
The ideal candidate possesses expert-level technical design skills, strong garment engineering knowledge, and the ability to translate design intent into clear, repeatable, production-ready documentation. This is a hands-on, detail-driven role responsible for ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and alignment from first prototype through final production release.
The Technical Designer drives cross-functional clarity, innovation, and operational excellence within the department, ensuring all deliverables meet quality expectations, manufacturing capabilities, and production timelines while supporting the company’s standards and growth goals.
Compensation & Benefits
House of Holmes offers a competitive compensation package designed to support our team both professionally and personally. This position includes a salary range of $55K-$65K annually, depending on experience, along with access to medical, dental, and vision benefits. Team members also receive 40 hours of paid time off (PTO) and 40 hours of paid sick time each year. In addition, we are developing a performance-based bonus incentive program to reward employee productivity, efficiency, and contributions to team success. Key Responsibilities
Technical Design and Patternmaking
- Assist in creating accurate patterns from sketches, reference samples, and tech packs using Gerber AccuMark software.
- Translate design concepts into production-ready patterns while considering fabric behavior, fit, and construction methods.
- Support sample development by collaborating with sample makers, providing technical input and ensuring design intent is executed.
- Review and interpret tech packs, engineering drawings, measurements, and construction details to ensure technical clarity and accuracy.
Team Leadership & Training
- Assist the Technical Department, including guiding Sample makers, Technical Design Assistants, and Spec Writers.
- Foster a collaborative and innovative team environment, ensuring seamless communication and alignment across all roles.
- Coordinate team efforts to track and meet timeline quotas, ensure compliance with technical specifications, and address non-compliance issues.
Product Development- Prototyping and Fit Development
- Oversee the technical design process from concept to production, ensuring accurate technical specifications, pattern and marker creation, and sample development.
- Participate in fittings and apply corrections to patterns based on fit sessions and client feedback.
Quality Assurance
- Enforce rigorous quality standards across all product stages.
- Inspect initial samples and production-ready patterns to ensure alignment with technical specifications and standards.
- Identify and troubleshoot potential construction or fit issues prior to full-scale production.
Safety and Compliance/Enforcement:
- Conduct Safety inspections and enforce health and safety protocols in line with the 5S’s and lean manufacturing standards for daily, weekly, monthly, and bi-annual checklists for all team members.
- Ensure compliance with safety guidelines and conduct regular checks as required.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Follow all safety protocols while operating machines.
- Collaborate with executive leadership, including sales, production, and quality control departments to ensure products align with creative goals, operational capabilities, and client expectations.
- Collaborate with Production, Quality Control, and Client Services teams to ensure seamless handoff of approved patterns and specifications.
Process Optimization
- Identify areas for improvement within the technical design workflow, implementing best practices to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and lead times.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of new tools, techniques, and construction solutions in the field of patternmaking.
Trend Analysis and Innovation
- Stay updated on industry trends, materials, and advancements in design technology.
- Incorporate relevant innovations into the design and production process.
Documentation and Reporting
- Record production output, issues, and deviations in daily logs.
- Prepare and review performance metrics and summarize achievements and challenges.
- Calendar documentation for the team and monitoring including budget tracking for department.
- Collect and maintain accurate records of KPI’s, defects, output, and team performance.
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum of 5 years in patternmaking/technical design, preferably within a cut-and-sew manufacturing environment.
- Strong expertise in garment construction, pattern engineering, and textile performance.
- Proficiency in office and design software such as Microsoft Office Suites, Adobe Illustrator, CAD, Gerber Patternmaking Software, preferred but not required, and other relevant tools.
- Deep understanding of grading, fit standards, and industrial sewing processes.
- Strong understanding of materials handling, garment construction, and support processes.
- Strong analytical skills to identify and resolve design and production challenges efficiently.
- Ability to supervise, coach, and lead a small support team.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
- Proactive problem-solving abilities with focus on efficiency and quality.
- Effective communicator with strong collaboration and conflict-resolution skills.
Preferred
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing and 5S practices.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred (pay differential offered).
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design, Textile Engineering, or a related field preferred.
Schedule & Work Environment
- Full-time position, Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Includes a 30-minute lunch break.
